Carla Marshall
Austin | Environmental Education Teacher
Ms Marshall is an environmental education teacher who founded the Green Classroom in 1989. It is a program, building and garden that originally served 3rd through 5th grade students, many at-risk, at Becker Elementary School in south Austin. With time, the program grew, through support of the City of Austin’s Watershed Protection and Development Review Department, Austin Energy and Keep Austin Beautiful, to offer programs known as “Earth Camp” and “Green Stewards” to more than 6000 of Austin’s children each year. In all these programs, students learn about the general environment through hands-on composting and gardening, watershed and aquifer models, and various lessons and literature. She has won recognition for her educational work by the Child Development Fund, National Gardening Association, Texas General Land Office, Texas Natural Resources Conservation Commission and other organizations.
