Maxine Johnston

Ms. Johnston had a career as a reference librarian and library director at Lamar University in Beaumont, but also has found time to work for environmental protection in the Big Thicket and across Texas. She has volunteered with the board of the Big Thicket Association and the Big Thicket Conservation Association since 1965, working with them to secure roughly 100,000 acres of unique, highly diverse habitat within the Thicket as a federal biological preserve. She also served in 1994-96 as a member of the State Executive Committee of the Sierra Club’s Lone Star Chapter to press for statewide public health, habitat and wildlife protection.
